Gretchen’s metalwork is created as an invitation for people to look more closely at the world around them. She borrows most of her images from the spirit of things surrounding her. The night sky and constellations. Patterns in water and wood, lichen on stone, moth wings. By bearing witness to moments in time, she responds by saturating the metal with memory. By hammering, imprinting, adding or wearing away, she reconstructs the natural processes surrounding her. Utilizing mostly recycled 925 silver and high karat golds, she hand fabricates pieces as unique and inspired as the people drawn to them.
Since receiving her BFA from Memphis College of Art, Gretchen has honed her skills and love for metal in a variety of fields. She has worked as a blacksmith and fabricator creating custom furniture and lighting, as a bench jeweler at a fine jewelry store, and as a TIG welder of titanium and stainless steel. All of these experiences add a richness and strength celebrated in her work.
