These mixed media sculptures are fabricated porcelain boxes with hand painted rice paper. The boxes are constructed first, then the painted rice paper is torn into strips and folded and wrapped tightly to form a spiral which is fitted into the opening of the ceramic box. I love the idea of the porcelain being unglazed and very spare, with just a little texture on the front. The focus then goes to the rice paper center which has varied tonalities of generally two to three bright colors. The contrast is what grabs the eye and holds the viewers attention. Though abstract, the patterns and styles are consistent so the eye does not question where to go - this creates a calming effect on the brain. Hence the name, meditation box.
