My artistic journey began 33 years ago as a bookbinder and calligrapher. These two pursuits gave me a solid foundation in craftsmanship and design. Over the years as a professional artist I have also explored paper marbling, silk screening, paper making, graphic design, painting and collage. I did a 2 year apprenticeship with a Mexican bookbinder living in the states and sold hand bound journals and photo albums across the country. Simultaneously I studied calligraphy and also did this on a freelance basis. I then completed a 2 year program in graphic design at LCC. I taught at Lane Community College, the U of O Craft Center and Maude Kerns Art Center for many years until I decided I wanted to pursue my art and craft career full time.
Currently my focus is on mixed media painting with collage. My paintings focus on color, composition, and movement. I strive to blend the classic with the contemporary. The acrylic paint is the primary medium, but often pieces are embellished with collage and pencil and sometimes coated with an oil and wax varnish. I try to imbue my work with an emotional quality that often tends towards the meditative and serene. The surface is usually painted in layers, parts are sometimes masked out and scratched into revealing the surface below. This adds to the textural quality and in a sense the painting reveals its own evolution. I delight in the spontaneous.
